In the early 1960’s, NEW ALEGRIA was formerly a sitio being a part of barrio Gabi, it
was on May 17, 1968, the Municipal Council of Compostela with the leadership of
Mayor Pio Galenzoga passed a resolution stipulating the creation of Sitio New Alegria in
Barrio Gabi, Compostela, Davao del Norte in to a regular barrio.
The Barangay New Alegria was formerly a sitio of Barangay Gabi, under the
eagerness of Jesus Jamero Sr. and through his effort, he saw that sitio New Alegria
was able to become a Barangay through his initiative he sends a resolution to
Sangguniang Panglungsod to make sitio New Alegria become a barangay.
May 03, 1968, New Alegria Elementary School was instituted. This primary
school was formerly established during the administration of the first lieutenant
Francisco Jamero Sr. who donated one hectare (1 ha.) land for the school site. The
said barangay lieutenant then convened his constituents for a barangay assembly and
proposed his primary project and that was the time that the Parent and Teachers
Association (PTA) of New Alegria Elementary School was organized. Through the
bayanihan of the community his bodega of abaca fiber was turned into a classroom.
The first teacher who taught for grade one was Mrs. Luz A. Lacal, the lone
teacher on its opening of the first school year 1968-1969. On the following years,
several teachers became part of the school history as the primary school and eventually
became a complete elementary school.
Since then, many people came and opted to settle in the progressive barangay.
The number of school children gradually increased, so by the school year 1995-1996,
New Alegria Elementary School offered the Fifth grade and the following years was the
beginning of the complete of New Alegria Elementary School (NAES).
The Elementary School of New Alegria emerged from the hilly part of the vast
abaca farms of generous Francisco Jamero Sr. patriarch. From a bare shanty hut
primary-school it progressed into a completely-structured, moderately equipped
elementary school buildings, standing gracefully. The school was forty meters (40
mtrs.) away from the provincial road and (5.5 kms.) away from Poblacion Compostela.
It is politically located adjacent with Barangay Mini-Gymnasium and Barangay site.
On April 25,1969, the Provincial Board of Davao del Norte with the leadership of
Hon. Gov. Verulo C. Boiser approved the creation of Sitio New Alegria into Barrio New
Alegria through Resolution No. 136.
Historically Francisco E. Jamero Sr, together with his family and followers arrived
in New Alegria in the 1950’s. At the time they arrived, there were few native people
particularly mandaya (tribe) cultivating the land with root crops as their source of food;
some of which are “carlang” ,“kamote”, “ balanghoy” and others but mostly the
surrounding were filled various forest trees. Some of these native people were know in
the family name of Balinawa, Mandaya and Bangag now known as “Tabang Family”.

The PECAVE also known as Pilipino Katoliko was the first church established in
the barangay that until now still exist through Rev. Fr Pines, the first members of this
church were Jamero family next by Lendio family and later on extended to the other
constituents of this sitio become a member of that church until the sitio New Alegria was
developed and become barangay more churches has been made in different religion.

Jamero including the school land area because of their love and service for

Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 4,710. This represented 5.24% of the total population of Compostela.

According to the 2015 Census, the age group with the highest population in New Alegria is 10 to 14, with 442 individuals. Conversely, the age group with the lowest population is 70 to 74, with 34 individuals.


Combining age groups together, those aged 14 and below, consisting of the young dependent population which include infants/babies, children and young adolescents/teenagers, make up an aggregate of 33.61% (1,242). Those aged 15 up to 64, roughly, the economically active population and actual or potential members of the work force, constitute a total of 62.22% (2,299). Finally, old dependent population consisting of the senior citizens, those aged 65 and over, total 4.17% (154) in all.

The computed Age Dependency Ratios mean that among the population of New Alegria, there are 54 youth dependents to every 100 of the working age population; there are 7 aged/senior citizens to every 100 of the working population; and overall, there are 61 dependents (young and old-age) to every 100 of the working population.

The median age of 24 indicates that half of the entire population of New Alegria are aged less than 24 and the other half are over the age of 24.
